Goals from a page visit

Name a path and the goal counts every visit that matched it — including the visits you already recorded.

If the action ends on a page of its own — a thank-you page, an order confirmation, a welcome screen — you do not need to touch your site. Describe the page and the goal is made from the visits already in your dashboard.

This is the only one of the five methods that counts backwards.

Setting one up

Open the goal editor

On the Goals card, press Add a goal, then choose From a page visit.

Name it and describe the page

Give the goal a name, then say how the path should match:

  • is exactly /thank-you — that page and nothing else

  • starts with /orders/ — every page beneath it

  • contains checkout — anywhere the word appears in the path

The match type is is exactly, starts with or contains; the note under the path says the goal has numbers the moment it is saved, because it counts visits already recorded.

Save

The goal appears with its numbers already filled in.

These count backwards. The rule is applied to visits you already recorded, so a goal you add today has last month's numbers the moment you save it. None of the other four methods can do this — they begin when you add them.

What to enter as the path

Enter the path, not the whole address: /pricing, not https://example.com/pricing. If you paste a full address we take the path out of it for you.

Anything after ? or # is dropped, because it is not part of what we store — so /pricing#plans would never match anything and /pricing is what you want.

Choosing between the three matchers

You wantMatcherExample
One exact pageis exactly/thank-you
A whole sectionstarts with/orders/ matches /orders/1842
A word anywhere in the pathcontainscheckout matches /shop/checkout/step-2

starts with is the one most people want for confirmation pages, because the order number is usually in the path and is exactly would then match nothing.

Editing and deleting

Open Add a goal again: goals you defined here are listed underneath, each with an edit and a delete button.

Deleting removes the definition, not your history. Define the same rule again and the same numbers come back — the visits were never stored as "a goal", the rule is applied when the card is drawn.

What this method cannot do

  • No parameters. There is nothing to attach them to; a visit is a visit. If you need to break a goal down by plan or billing period, use From your code.

  • No money value. Values are accepted from one route only, see With a money value.

  • Only pages. An action with no page of its own — a button inside an app, a form that submits without navigating — is not visible to a path rule. Use On a click instead.
