Nothing breaks.
That is the whole page, but it is worth saying precisely what does and does not happen, because most analytics products behave differently here and the difference matters on the month it applies to you.
What happens
Collection continues. Every event after your limit is recorded exactly as before. Nothing is dropped, nothing is sampled, nothing is queued for later.
Your dashboard keeps working. Every number, every breakdown, every chart, your API, your share links — all unchanged.
A banner appears telling you that you have gone over, by how much, and offering an add-on or a step up.
The moment you crossed is recorded, so your billing page can tell you when it happened rather than only that it did.

What does not happen
We do not stop collecting. The month your post lands on Hacker News is the month you most want the graph, and a product that goes dark exactly then is worse than useless.
We do not black out your dashboard. Some products lock the dashboard at the limit and keep collecting behind it, so you are paying to be shown a paywall over your own numbers. We do not.
We do not sample. Your numbers over the limit are counts, not estimates.
We do not automatically charge you more. Going over does not silently upgrade you or add a charge. You choose what to do.
This is structural rather than a promise: the code path that counts your usage runs after the event has already been written, and cannot reject it.
What you should do
Three options, and doing nothing is one of them.
Do nothing
Fine for a one-off spike. Your data is complete, your dashboard works, the banner sits there. There is no penalty accruing.
Buy an add-on
Extra events for the current period only. The right answer for a spike you do not expect to repeat — a launch, a viral post, a conference.
Your limit for the period becomes your plan's allowance plus the add-on, and it reverts at the next period.
Move up a traffic step
The right answer for sustained growth. It takes effect immediately and is prorated against the rest of your period. See Changing plan.
Both the add-on purchase and the in-app step change are part of the billing screens still being built. Until they are live, email billing@truestat.io and it will be handled manually — your collection is unaffected either way.
If you stay over month after month
Nothing changes automatically. You will keep seeing the banner and we will keep collecting.
At some point that is a conversation rather than an escalation — if your traffic has outgrown the top of the ladder, write to billing@truestat.io.
What actually stops collection
For completeness, since this page is about what does not:
The site is switched off in its settings. Deliberate, and reversible.
Your subscription has lapsed past its grace period. See Cancelling.
Your trial ended without a plan being chosen.
Being over your event limit is not on that list.
