How long your events are kept, per tier.

Retention follows your tier, not your traffic step. A Starter customer on the 20M step keeps 3 years; a Pro customer on the 50k step keeps 5.
Two clocks, and why
Retention here is two settings, not one, because two different kinds of data are involved and they carry different obligations.

Your dashboard reads from the reports, so shortening the raw window does not shorten your history, change a single number, or remove a chart.
What the raw window buys you is the ability to ask a question nobody anticipated — a breakdown that was never a report, on data already collected. While raw events are kept, that is answerable. After they expire, you can still see everything the reports cover, for the full plan window.
Why you would want it short
If you rely on the French or Spanish audience-measurement exemption to run without a cookie banner, those regulators recommend raw data be kept no longer than 25 months and trackers no longer than 13 months. Both are presets in your site settings, labelled for exactly that purpose.
More generally, storage limitation under GDPR is your decision as the data controller, based on your own purpose — not ours to make for you. That is why this is a setting rather than a plan feature. Your plan sets the maximum; you set the value.
This is worth comparing before you choose a tool. Several products quote a single long retention figure and do not tell you which of the two clocks it describes — or keep visitor-identified rows for the whole of it, which is the part a regulator would actually ask about.
What happens at the edge
Rows older than your window are deleted, continuously in the background rather than in a monthly sweep. There is no archive, no cold storage tier and no way to retrieve a deleted row.
Your date range picker's All time preset reaches back to your retention limit. Asking for a range further back than that returns the data that exists and tells you the range was clamped, rather than erroring or silently truncating.
Downgrading shortens your window
Moving from Pro to Starter takes your retention from 5 years to 3, and events older than 3 years are deleted.
If those matter, export them before the downgrade takes effect — which is at the end of your current period, not immediately. See Changing plan.
Upgrading does not resurrect anything. Moving from Starter to Pro gives you a 5-year window from that point, but data already deleted under the 3-year window is gone.
What is not covered by retention
Your site settings, exclusions, share links and team memberships are not events and are not pruned. They persist as long as the site does.
Aggregate visitor rollups follow the same window as the events they summarise.
Longer retention
There is no add-on for longer retention. The tiers are the two options.

Your data is retained through the grace period described in Cancelling rather than being deleted the moment your subscription ends. You get a window to export or to resubscribe.
