The range picker sits at the top of the dashboard and controls every number and every card on the page.

Note the difference between Today and Last 24 hours: at 09:00, "Today" covers nine hours and "Last 24 hours" covers a full day including yesterday evening. The two rarely agree and neither is wrong.
Which timezone
Presets resolve in your browser's local timezone, so "Today" starts when your day starts, not when UTC's does. There is no per-site timezone to set: two people on different continents looking at the same site each see their own "Today", and both are right.
The two things that run without a browser — the weekly digest e-mail and alerts — use UTC days.
Stepping back and forward
The arrows either side of the picker move the window by its own length. From "Last 7 days", the back arrow shows you the seven days before that. This is how you compare like with like — set a range, then step back one.
Custom ranges
Click the picker, choose Custom at the foot of the list, and pick two dates in the calendar. The range is inclusive of both.
Granularity
The chart's bucket size is chosen from the length of the range, and you can override it within the options that make sense:

Now is minute-grained and fixed — there is no granularity choice on it.
Empty buckets are filled with zeros rather than skipped, so a quiet Sunday appears as a gap at zero rather than being silently omitted and making the chart lie about its own time axis.
Retention clamping
If you ask for a range that reaches further back than your plan's retention window, you get the data that exists rather than an error, and the dashboard tells you the range was clamped.

Comparisons
The tiles compare themselves for you. Each one carries a percentage change against the previous period of the same length — set Last 7 days and the figure beside each tile is the move against the seven days before it. An arrow gives the direction, and on bounce rate a fall is drawn as the improvement it is.
Two tiles deliberately carry no comparison: AI crawlers, because crawler volume swings on the operators' schedule rather than yours, and Online, which has no previous period to compare against.
A change is left blank rather than shown when the previous period was zero — there is no percentage increase from nothing.
The chart itself has no previous-period overlay. For a period-against-period read on the chart, use the back arrow: note the shape, step back one window, compare.
Filters and the range
Drill-down filters and the range are independent. Clicking a country row filters the whole dashboard to that country and keeps your range; changing the range keeps your filters. The Filters button shows how many are active — see Breakdowns.
