Funnels

Funnels

Saved step sequences — and the one parameter people misread.

A funnel is an ordered sequence: landed, saw pricing, paid. Two to seven steps.

window_seconds is not a date range

This is the part worth reading before anything else.

window_seconds is how long one visitor has to finish every step. It has nothing to do with which period you are reporting on.

period=last30dWhich visits the report covers
window_seconds=86400How long each of those visitors had to get through the funnel

Somebody who lands on Monday and pays on Friday counts in a week-long funnel and does not count in a day-long one — even when the report covers the whole month.

Five values, matching the editor

SecondsThe dashboard calls it
3600within an hour
86400within a day
604800within a week
2592000within 30 days (default)
7776000within 90 days

Anything else is a 400 listing these.

The column would accept any value from 60 seconds to 90 days, and the API deliberately does not. A funnel saved with, say, 7200 seconds opens in the dashboard's editor with no matching option — it falls back to the first entry and writes that back the next time somebody renames the funnel. Your setting would disappear without anybody touching it.

Steps

Three kinds, and each refuses fields it does not use:

{ "kind": "view" }                                       // any page
{ "kind": "view", "value": "/pricing", "match": "starts_with" }
{ "kind": "goal", "value": "signup" }
{ "kind": "payment" }

payment takes no value — "paid" is one event kind, there is nothing to narrow. Sending {"kind": "payment", "value": "100"} is a 400 naming the key, not a silent drop.

A view with no value means any page, which is how a first step is usually written: "landed on the site". Requiring one would make that step impossible.

Editing replaces the whole sequence

There is no "change step 2". The steps are ordered and depend on each other, so a partial edit would have to define what happens to the ones around it. Read the funnel, change the array, send it back.

Editing changes the past

The completion counts are computed from events when a report is read — not recorded when the visit happened. So new steps rewrite every figure the funnel has ever shown.

A funnel looks more like a saved report than a goal rule does, which is why this is worth saying: a saved report would usually keep its numbers, and this one does not.

Deleting is different from a goal rule. It removes the definition and nothing else — the same visits remain, and a funnel defined again with the same steps reports the same numbers.
